These tarts have been a long time in the making (almost two years!) but I just never got around to making them. So when I saw the first cherries of the season appear at my local farmers market, I wasn’t going to let the opportunity slip me by for another year.

This blog post also got me thinking about how we all have our funny little food aversions. To this day I haven’t met a single person that doesn’t have some weird food dislike for at least one food item out there, be it for its texture, taste or flavour combination. And funnily enough, the strongest likes/dislikes usually involve chocolate.

Let’s take me for example: I love chocolate (minimum 70% dark) but I can be very funny when it comes to mixing chocolate with other food. Chocolate and mint? No thanks! That usually sends me running. Chocolate and orange? Yuk! Makes me dry heave just thinking about it. Chocolate and strawberries? Never really did it for me.

Mention chocolate and cherries however, and the mere thought of it sends my taste buds tripping. The flavour combination works so well for me, especially when combined with dark chocolate, that I could happily pour dark melted chocolate over all the cherries I eat this summer.

And with summer comes heat. But who wants to be stuck in a hot kitchen, baking all day? Not me, thanks. Trouble is, I love a good tart, but I’m really not a fan of making the bases, at least not in summer (as opposed to winter, where I will happily bake for hours!).

So for these chocolate and cherry tarts, I decided to keep my rolling pins in the kitchen cupboard and make something much easier. I used crushed Oreo biscuits for the tart bases, but you can use any other chocolate-based biscuit. I also used Oreos for visual effect – their almost-black colour adding to the dark and moody phase I’m going through at the moment with my photography.
Do try them out and let me know what you think.

Before I go though, I’m curious and I have to ask: what are your food dislikes?
(I'm hoping it's not chocolate and cherries!)

Hope you’re all enjoying the summer!
